Looking for a Santaquin photographer? Hey there — I’m Jen Kunz. Santaquin is the farthest south I regularly travel in Utah County, and honestly, I wish more people knew what a hidden gem this place is for photos. It’s about an hour and fifteen minutes from my home in South Weber, and every time I drive down and see those mountain-backed fields open up south of Payson, I get excited. This town has agricultural roots, wide-open spaces, and a mountain canyon that feels like a secret. If you’re here, I want to photograph your family against this backdrop. It’s too good not to.
Santaquin — fields, mountains, and small-town roots
Santaquin sits right where Utah Valley starts to narrow and the mountains close in. It’s the kind of place where you can still see working farms, where Main Street has character that wasn’t manufactured, and where the backdrop is just… everywhere. Mountains to the east, fields rolling out to the west, and Santaquin Canyon cutting into the range with trails and creeks and autumn color that rivals anywhere in the state.
What I love about shooting here is the space. Not just physical space (though there’s plenty of that) — breathing room. Santaquin doesn’t feel rushed. It doesn’t feel crowded. Sessions here have a calm, grounded quality that comes from the environment itself. The Orchard Days heritage, the agricultural character, the fact that you can stand in a field and hear nothing but wind and maybe a cow — all of that shows up in photos. It makes images feel real and rooted in a way that’s hard to get in a busy suburb.
What I photograph in Santaquin
Families
Santaquin family sessions are something special. The fields here — oh man, the fields. Golden grass, mountain backdrop, that warm last-light glow. Your family walking through all of it, kids running ahead, you and your partner holding hands behind them. That’s the shot. That’s the one everyone loves. But we’ll get plenty of others too — the pile-up hug, the individual kid portraits, the candid stuff that happens when everyone relaxes. I keep things loose and fun. Your job is just to show up and be yourselves. I’ll handle the rest.
Weddings & Elopements
If you want a Santaquin photographer for your wedding, you’re probably drawn to the same things I am about this area — the privacy, the natural beauty, the feeling of being somewhere real. Santaquin Canyon elopements are intimate and stunning. Barn or field receptions with the mountains going pink behind you? Unforgettable. My approach is documentary and calm. I don’t stage your wedding — I witness it and capture what matters. Visit my wedding photography page to see that philosophy in action.
Maternity
Those open fields south of town with the mountains rising behind? That’s a maternity session waiting to happen. The scale of it — you, your bump, and this vast beautiful landscape — creates images that feel epic and intimate at the same time. I shoot maternity at 28 to 34 weeks. Bring a flowing dress (seriously, it doesn’t have to be fancy — just something that moves). The Santaquin breeze at golden hour is basically a free stylist. The light down here comes in low and warm and wraps around everything.
Newborns
Newborn sessions happen at your home. No driving, no packing, no leaving the house with a days-old baby. I come to you with simple wraps, use your window light, and move at whatever pace your little one sets. Feed, doze, photograph. The details are everything — the tiny fingers, the milk-drunk face, the way they curl up on your chest. Parents and siblings are always part of it. This moment is fleeting, and I’m here to preserve exactly how it feels.
Senior Pictures
Santaquin seniors — your location options are unmatched. Wide-open fields for dramatic, editorial-style shots. The canyon for something moody and adventurous. Main Street for a touch of small-town texture. I customize every senior session to match who you are. Your passions, your personality, your style. Bring a few outfits, share your vibe with me, and I’ll create a session that results in photos nobody else will have. Because they’ll be uniquely yours.
Branding & Headshots
Running a farm operation, a small business, or working remote from Santaquin? Professional imagery matters, and it shouldn’t look like a stock photo. I shoot headshots and branding sessions with natural light — clean, warm, authentic. Images that represent who you actually are and what you actually do. Perfect for websites, social media, and anywhere you need to make a first impression.
Santaquin photo locations and when they shine
| Location | Look & Feel | Best Time |
|---|---|---|
| Santaquin Canyon | Creek, trees, canyon walls, secluded mountain setting | Late spring through fall, morning or late afternoon light |
| Agricultural fields south of town | Wide-open farmland, mountain panorama, golden grass, big sky | Summer and fall, golden hour (this is the money spot) |
| Main Street / historic downtown | Small-town character, older buildings, trees, Americana feel | Year-round, overcast or late afternoon |
| Mountain foothills east of town | Sloping terrain, scrub oak, elevation views over the valley | Fall color (October), golden hour |
| Orchard areas | Fruit trees, rural charm, seasonal blossoms or bare branches | Spring blossoms (April–May), fall harvest |
Santaquin is full of spots that don’t have names — just a pulloff, a field, a view you notice on your drive home. If you’ve got a place like that, or family land, or just a stretch of road that’s always caught your eye, tell me. Those personal locations make the best photos.
Planning your Santaquin session
- What to wear: Warm, earthy tones are perfect here — rust, cream, sage, mustard, soft brown, dusty blue. Santaquin’s landscape is warm and golden (especially late summer and fall), so earthy palettes blend right in. Families should coordinate loosely, not match.
- Timing: The light in Santaquin is different from cities further north in the valley. We’re a bit more south, the mountains frame differently, and golden hour hits at slightly different angles. I plan timing specifically for each location so we get the best light. You just show up — I’ve done the math.
- Kids: Snacks. That’s rule number one. Rule two: let them run. The big open spaces here are perfect for letting little ones burn off energy, and those running-through-the-field shots? Absolute gold. I know how to work with wiggly, distracted, totally-over-it kids. It’s basically a specialty at this point.
- Stay natural: I give direction — walk here, look at each other, squeeze your kid — but loosely. The magic happens when you stop thinking about the camera and just exist in the moment. That’s what I’m capturing.
My photography style
I shoot with a Nikon Z6III and fast prime lenses, natural light always. My editing is clean, warm, and real — true colors, real skin tones, no trendy filters that age badly. Every gallery includes black and white conversions because certain images simply hit different in monochrome. I’m after timeless photography. The kind that still makes you feel something when you pull it off the shelf in 2050. That’s the goal, every session.
Santaquin through the seasons
Spring in Santaquin means orchards blooming while the mountains still carry snow — the contrast is beautiful. The fields green up, the canyon starts to fill with wildflowers, and the whole town feels like it’s waking up. Summer is peak shooting season. Those long golden evenings, the fields tall and honey-colored, the mountain air warm but not heavy. It’s perfect. Fall is extraordinary down here. The canyon goes red and orange, the fields turn amber, the light drops lower and warmer every week, and there’s a richness to everything that makes you want to photograph constantly. (I may be biased, but fall in Santaquin might be the best-kept secret in Utah County photography.) Winter brings a different beauty — snow on the peaks, frosted fields, bare trees against dramatic skies. Quieter, moodier, and perfect for couples or intimate sessions.
Questions I get
- How early should I book? Two to four weeks for most sessions. Weddings — minimum three to six months, especially for fall.
- Rain plan? We reschedule, no charge. Overcast days are actually great for photos — soft, even, flattering light everywhere.
- How many photos will I receive? Typically 30 to 80 fully edited images depending on session type and length.
- Do you also shoot in nearby areas? All the time. I work regularly in Payson, Salem, Mapleton, and throughout southern Utah County.
- Can I bring animals? Please do. Dogs, horses (if it’s your property) — animals add so much to sessions. Leash/halter for safety, treats for motivation.
- Do you offer prints? Yes — lab-quality prints, canvases, and heirloom albums available through your online gallery.
