Looking for a Midvale photographer? I’m Jen Kunz, and I photograph families, seniors, maternity sessions, newborns, weddings, and branding work throughout Midvale and the central Salt Lake Valley. Midvale is one of those cities that doesn’t get the credit it deserves — it’s centrally located, packed with character, and sits right at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon with mountain access that most valley cities can only dream about. I make the drive down from Ogden (about 30 minutes on I-15), and Midvale’s combination of established neighborhoods, urban texture, and canyon proximity makes it an incredibly versatile place to photograph.

Why Midvale works so well for photography

Midvale sits in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, flanked by the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Jordan River corridor to the west. What makes it special is the variety packed into a small area: you’ve got the revitalized Bingham Junction and Fort Union areas bringing modern energy, historic Main Street with its older architecture and character, and Big Cottonwood Canyon literally minutes away for anyone wanting mountain drama. The Jordan River Parkway runs right through town, offering tree-lined trails and river views that feel surprisingly natural for mid-valley.

I also regularly shoot in neighboring Murray, Cottonwood Heights, South Salt Lake, and Sandy. The central valley communities flow together seamlessly, and knowing the best pockets across all of them means I always have the right backdrop for whatever you’re envisioning.

What I photograph in Midvale

Families

Family sessions in Midvale give me so many options. The Jordan River Parkway for natural, tree-lined settings. The newer Bingham Junction area for clean, modern backdrops. Or a quick drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon for mountain drama without leaving your neighborhood’s orbit. Midvale families come in all shapes and configurations, and I love that about working here. I focus on what’s real: the way your toddler reaches for you, the laughter between siblings, the quiet moment when everyone just breathes together. The polished group portrait happens, but the images you’ll frame are the candid ones.

Weddings & Elopements

As a Midvale photographer who covers weddings across the Wasatch Front, I appreciate what this central location offers. Big Cottonwood Canyon provides stunning elopement settings within minutes — Silver Lake, Donut Falls trailhead, and alpine meadows that feel worlds away from the valley floor. Midvale’s venue options range from boutique spaces in the Fort Union area to larger reception centers along the State Street corridor. I bring a calm, documentary style to every wedding, capturing what actually happens rather than staging what didn’t.

Maternity

Midvale’s proximity to the Wasatch canyons makes maternity sessions here particularly beautiful. I love shooting in the golden light along the Jordan River Parkway, where cottonwood trees create a natural canopy, or heading just a few minutes up Big Cottonwood for mountain wildflower meadows. Sessions work best between 28 and 34 weeks. Bring a gown that flows and highlights your belly — against the Wasatch backdrop or the riverside trails, the images are effortlessly stunning.

Newborns

For Midvale newborn sessions, I come to your home. The last thing new parents need is a production — just a warm house, a fed baby, and me with my camera and a few simple wraps. I use the natural window light in your space, work at your baby’s pace, and focus on the details that disappear so fast: tiny toes, sleeping expressions, the way your newborn fits in the crook of your arm. Parents and siblings are always part of it. This is about your family, right now, in this moment.

Senior Pictures

Midvale seniors have one of the most diverse backdrops in the valley. Urban grit along Main Street, modern architecture at Bingham Junction, canyon drama up Big Cottonwood, or parkway nature along the Jordan River. I build every senior session around who you are. Tell me about your sport, your art, your vibe, and I’ll pick the locations and timing that make your personality shine. These photos should feel like you — not like every other senior in the yearbook.

Real Estate & Branding

Midvale’s housing market spans from charming mid-century homes to modern townhome developments, and each one benefits from professional photography that shows the property at its best. Whether you need real estate photography for a Midvale listing, headshots for your Fort Union practice, or lifestyle branding images for your business, I deliver clean, well-lit imagery that looks professional without feeling corporate. Real people, real spaces, presented with care.

Midvale photo locations and when they shine

Midvale and the surrounding central valley offer a wonderful variety of shooting locations. Here are some I return to regularly:

Location Look & Feel Best Time
Jordan River Parkway (Midvale section) Cottonwood-lined river trail, natural greenery, peaceful and secluded Spring through fall, morning or golden hour
Big Cottonwood Canyon (lower reaches) Mountain creek, evergreens, canyon walls, dramatic elevation Late spring through fall, morning light
Bingham Junction / Allen Park area Modern mixed-use, clean architecture, urban-meets-suburban Year-round, golden hour or overcast
Midvale City Park Mature trees, open fields, playground area, classic park setting Spring through fall, late afternoon
Historic Main Street Midvale Older storefronts, brick textures, urban character Year-round, overcast or golden hour
Copperview Recreation Center grounds Open lawns, mountain views east, family-friendly Summer and fall, evening light

This is just the beginning. Big Cottonwood Canyon alone offers dozens of pull-offs, meadows, and creek-side spots. If you have a location that’s meaningful to you — a favorite park bench, your backyard, the spot where you said yes — I’d love to incorporate it.

Planning your session

  • Wardrobe that photographs well: Soft, muted tones work beautifully — dusty blue, sage, cream, terra cotta, warm grey. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and overly trendy pieces. Coordinate as a family without matching identically.
  • Timing that flatters: The Wasatch Mountains to Midvale’s east mean the sun dips behind peaks earlier than in west-valley cities. I schedule sessions to catch the best golden light for the specific location we choose.
  • Kids, snacks, sanity: Snacks are essential. A small toy for transitions helps. Let them be kids — I’ve photographed enough toddlers to know that the wiggly, silly moments become everyone’s favorite images.
  • Movement over stiffness: Walk together, pick up your kid, lean into each other, laugh at something real. I give gentle direction, but the best photos come from genuine interaction, not rigid posing.

Maternity sessions look incredible in a flowing gown along the Jordan River Parkway or against canyon scenery. Newborn sessions need nothing but a warm home and a fed baby. Seniors should bring two or three outfits and share their style so I can match locations to personality.

My style and approach

I photograph with a Nikon Z6III and fast prime lenses, relying on natural light for nearly every session. My editing is clean, warm, and honest — no heavy filters, no artificial skin tones, no oversaturated anything. Colors look like they actually looked. Skin looks like skin. Every gallery includes black and white edits because certain moments carry more weight stripped down to light and shadow. The goal is timeless photography — images that will feel just as powerful on your wall years from now.

Seasons in the central valley

Spring in Midvale brings budding cottonwoods along the Jordan River, green foothills below still-snowy Wasatch peaks, and the kind of soft light that makes everything glow. Summer is warm and golden — long evenings, dry grass, and families ready to be outside. Fall transforms Big Cottonwood Canyon into a corridor of red, orange, and gold that rivals anything in the state, while the valley floor stays warm with yellow leaves and amber light. Winter is crisp and beautiful: snow-dusted mountains visible from every neighborhood, frost along the river, and quiet mornings with sharp, clean light. Each season reshapes what Midvale offers, and I plan sessions around whatever the current season does best.

Frequently asked questions

  • How far in advance should I book? Two to four weeks for most sessions. Weddings need three to six months. Fall is the busiest season — early booking helps.
  • What if it rains? We reschedule at no cost. Overcast days are actually wonderful for photography — soft, even light with no harsh shadows.
  • How many images will I receive? Typically 30 to 80 fully edited images, depending on session length, delivered through an online gallery.
  • Do you offer prints and albums? Yes. Lab-calibrated prints, canvases, and heirloom albums are available directly through your gallery.
  • Can we bring our pet? Absolutely. Leash for safety, treats for motivation, and I promise to get at least one great shot of them.
  • Is there a travel fee from Ogden? No. Midvale is within my regular service area — no travel charges at all.
