Utah Engagement Photographer
Just got engaged and looking for a Utah engagement photographer to capture the excitement before the big day?
I’m Jen — a portrait and wedding photographer based in South Weber, Utah — and engagement sessions are honestly some of my favorite things to shoot.
There’s this giddy, electric energy that newly engaged couples bring to a session that you just can’t replicate, and it translates into the most beautiful, genuine photos.
Whether you’re planning to use your engagement portraits for save-the-dates, wedding displays, or just because you want stunning photos of this chapter together, I’ll make sure you look and feel incredible.
Why engagement photography matters
You just said yes (or they did), and right now everything feels heightened — the excitement, the love, the anticipation, the plans swirling around in your head. You’re texting everyone you know. You’re staring at your ring every five minutes.
Everything feels golden. This is one of those rare, in-between seasons that deserves to be documented because it doesn’t last forever. You’re not just dating anymore. You’re not married yet.
You’re engaged — and that carries its own kind of magic that’s impossible to recreate later.
Engagement photos serve a practical purpose, sure. You’ll use them for your save-the-dates, your wedding website, your reception slideshow, your holiday card, and probably your new phone wallpaper.
But more than that, they give you a chance to slow down in the middle of all the wedding planning chaos — the venue tours, the catering tastings, the guest list drama — and just be together.
To remember why you’re doing all of this in the first place. To be present with each other in a beautiful place with no distractions.
They’re also a trial run for your wedding photography, which is more important than most couples realize.
By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll already be comfortable with me, familiar with how I direct and prompt, and confident in front of the camera. That comfort shows up in your wedding portraits in a big way.
Couples who do engagement sessions almost always have better, more relaxed wedding photos — and that’s not a coincidence.
Plus, let’s be honest — you two look really good together, and now we have an excuse to prove it with professional lighting and a mountain backdrop.
What to expect at your engagement session
An engagement session with me is relaxed, fun, and entirely about the two of you. No rigid posing charts, no awkward silences, no “okay now look at each other and smile” on repeat.
Just good light, beautiful scenery, and a photographer who knows how to make you feel natural together.
Before the session
We’ll have a quick planning call or exchange messages where we pick a location (or two), talk about outfits, and nail down the timing for the best light.
I’ll send you a prep guide with my best tips for looking great on camera — what fabrics photograph well, how to coordinate without matching, and how to show up feeling your best. Most couples bring 1 to 2 outfits for variety.
This is also when we get to know each other a bit. I’ll ask about how you met, what you love doing together, what the proposal looked like — partly because I’m genuinely curious and partly because those details help me understand your dynamic so I can capture it authentically.
During the session
Engagement sessions typically run about 60 minutes, sometimes a bit longer if we’re working with multiple locations or the light is too good to leave.
I’ll guide you through natural prompts and movements — walking together, whispering something funny, forehead touches, the little intimate moments that feel real because they are. If you feel awkward in front of a camera, that’s completely normal.
Within five minutes, most couples forget the camera is even there because I keep things light, conversational, and genuinely fun.
You don’t need to be “good at photos.” You just need to be in love with each other, and I’ll handle the rest.
After the session
Your fully edited gallery is delivered within 2 to 3 weeks — plenty of time for save-the-date printing. Every image is individually edited for color, tone, and light — not batch-processed, not filtered, not run through a one-click preset.
You’ll receive a private online gallery where you can download high-resolution images for save-the-dates, social media, prints, and anything else you need. All edited photos from the session are yours — no picking favorites, no leaving images behind.
Getting married soon? Engagement sessions pair perfectly with a wedding package — you’ll walk into your wedding day feeling completely at ease with me and my camera. See my packages or reach out to learn more.
Where we shoot
Utah was basically designed for engagement photos. Mountains, canyons, alpine lakes, downtown streets, desert flats, forest trails — we have every backdrop imaginable within an hour’s drive, and I know the light at all of them.
I’ll help you pick a location that matches your personality, your style, and the vibe you’re going for.
Some of my favorite engagement session locations:
- Big Cottonwood Canyon — Moody, lush, and romantic. Creek-side shots in this canyon are some of the most requested images I deliver. The filtered light through the pines is otherworldly.
- Antelope Island — Open skies, wild grasses, and sunsets that look like someone painted them. Dramatic, breathtaking, and completely unlike anywhere else.
- Historic 25th Street, Ogden — Brick walls, neon signs, murals, and urban character. Great for couples who want a more downtown, editorial feel with personality.
- Snowbasin — Mountain views for days. Especially gorgeous during fall when the aspens turn gold, or during summer golden hour when everything glows warm.
- The Bonneville Salt Flats — Minimalist, ethereal, and unlike anywhere else on earth. If you want engagement photos that stop people mid-scroll, this is the spot. Reflective water at sunrise or sunset is pure magic.
- Tibble Fork Reservoir (American Fork Canyon) — Crystal blue water surrounded by mountain peaks. Stunning in late summer and early fall.
- Ogden Canyon — Winding canyon road with towering walls, river access, and soft shade that makes for gorgeous, intimate portraits.
- Your proposal spot or somewhere meaningful — If there’s a place with a story — where you had your first date, where they proposed, a hiking trail you love — I’d love to shoot there. Those locations add a layer of meaning that makes the images truly yours.
If you can’t decide, I’ll help you pick based on season, timing, and your personal style. My location guide has even more inspiration — and my gallery shows what’s possible at each spot.

Frequently asked questions
- When should we do our engagement session? Most couples book their engagement session 3 to 6 months before the wedding so there’s plenty of time to use the photos for save-the-dates and your wedding website. But there’s no wrong time — a session right after the proposal is just as special, and so is a session a month before the wedding if that’s what works.
- What should we wear? I’ll send you a detailed guide when you book, but the short version: choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Coordinate without matching — complementary colors and textures work best. Most couples bring 1 to 2 outfit options and I’ll help make sure they’ll photograph well together.
- What if we’re awkward in front of the camera? Most couples are! That’s completely normal and expected. I’ll guide you through natural movements and prompts so you never feel stiff or posed. Within the first few minutes, you’ll forget the camera is there — and that’s when the best images happen.
- Can we bring our dog? Please do. Dogs make everything better — including engagement photos. I’ve photographed sessions with dogs, cats, horses, and even a goat once. If they’re part of your story, they’re part of your photos.
- How many photos will we get? Most engagement sessions include 30 to 60+ fully edited images. Every photo is individually color-corrected and edited — no batch processing, no one-click filters.
- Can we do two locations in one session? If the locations are close together, absolutely. I’ll help you plan a route that maximizes our time and catches the best light at each spot. It’s a great way to get variety in your gallery.
