Looking for a Hyrum photographer who understands this part of Cache Valley? I’m Jen Kunz, and I photograph families, weddings, maternity sessions, newborns, seniors, and branding work in and around Hyrum. This town sits at the southern end of the valley with Hyrum Reservoir, rolling farmland, and the Wellsville Mountains right next door — a combination that makes for some of the most beautiful portrait locations in northern Utah. If you’re ready for images that feel real and look beautiful, let’s talk.

Southern Cache Valley at its finest

Hyrum has a character all its own. It’s quieter than Logan, less traveled than Providence, and surrounded by the kind of open land and water that photographers dream about. Hyrum State Park is the obvious standout — the reservoir backed by mountains creates a setting that works for everything from engagement sessions to family portraits — but the town itself has charm too. The older streets, the farmland on the outskirts, the way the light settles over the valley in the evening — it all adds up to a place that photographs beautifully.

I work throughout southern Cache Valley regularly, including Wellsville, Nibley, and Mendon, so I know the pockets of good light and the spots that most people drive right past. Whether we stay in Hyrum proper or venture a few minutes in any direction, we’ll find a location that fits your session perfectly.

What I photograph in Hyrum

Families

Family sessions in Hyrum tend to feel relaxed from the start because the setting encourages it. There’s room for kids to move, grass to sit in, and enough open space that nobody feels boxed in. I work with families at every stage — first babies, growing broods, extended family reunions, and everything between. My approach is part direction, part observation: I’ll guide you into positions that flatter, then let real moments happen. The fields and shorelines around Hyrum give us a clean, natural backdrop that keeps the focus where it belongs — on your people.

Weddings & Elopements

As a Hyrum wedding photographer, I’ve covered ceremonies at the reservoir, receptions in family backyards, and everything in between. Southern Cache Valley weddings tend to be personal and unpretentious, and that’s exactly the kind of event I love to photograph. I document the day as it happens — the getting-ready chaos, the quiet moments before the ceremony, the dancing that goes later than anyone planned. If you’re planning a wedding or elopement in Hyrum or the surrounding area, I’d love to be part of it.

Maternity

The open meadows and soft evening light around Hyrum make it an ideal spot for maternity sessions. I keep things simple — a beautiful dress, natural light, and a location that gives you space to breathe. Most clients book between 28 and 34 weeks, and we plan the session around your comfort and energy level. The reservoir shoreline and surrounding fields offer gentle, flattering backdrops that complement the moment without competing with it.

Newborns

I photograph newborns in your home, so Hyrum families don’t need to pack up a two-week-old and drive anywhere. I use natural window light and simple, minimal setups to capture your baby in those earliest days — the tiny details, the sleepy expressions, the way they curl into whoever is holding them. No elaborate props, no forced poses. Just real, tender images of your newest family member in the place where their story is beginning.

Senior Pictures

Senior portraits around Hyrum give us options that range from lakeside to mountain trail to open field. I work with seniors who want photos that actually represent them — their personality, their style, their favorite places. We can shoot at the reservoir, up in the foothills, or even in downtown Logan if that fits better. I guide posing throughout the session so it never feels awkward, and we wrap up with images you’ll actually want to print, not just post.

Real Estate & Branding

As a Hyrum branding photographer, I work with local business owners, entrepreneurs, and agents who need professional visuals that actually look like them. Whether it’s headshots for your website, lifestyle branding images for social media, or real estate photos for a property listing around Hyrum or the valley, I bring clean, professional work with a natural feel. Good branding photography builds trust before a single word is read.

Hyrum locations and when they shine

Hyrum punches above its weight when it comes to session locations. Between the reservoir, the surrounding farmland, and the mountain access nearby, we have more variety than most people realize. I’ve shot in all of these spots across different seasons, so I can match the right location to your session and the current light.

Location Look & Feel Best Time
Hyrum State Park / Reservoir Waterfront, mountain reflections, sandy shore Summer and fall sunset, calm evenings
Hardware Ranch Road Open meadows, mountain canyon, rural charm Late spring through fall, golden hour
Wellsville Mountain trailhead Foothill wildflowers, panoramic valley views Late spring and summer morning or evening
Hyrum town fields (south end) Farmland, fences, open sky Year-round sunset, fall harvest colors
Little Bear River corridor Cottonwood trees, creek banks, dappled light Summer and early fall afternoon shade

I’m also happy to shoot at a location you already love. If there’s a family property, a favorite stretch of road, or a backyard with a view, those personal spots often make the best session settings because you’re already comfortable there.

Planning your session without the fuss

  • Wardrobe that photographs well: Coordinate, don’t match. Soft tones in the same color family — sage, cream, dusty blue, warm neutrals — create a cohesive look without feeling like a uniform.
  • Timing that flatters: Golden hour is king. I’ll schedule your session so we’re shooting in the warmest, most flattering light of the day based on the season and location.
  • Kids, snacks, sanity: Goldfish crackers have saved more sessions than any photography technique I know. Bring snacks, lower expectations, and trust me to get the shots between the chaos.
  • Movement over stiffness: I’ll ask you to walk, hug, spin the kids, whisper something funny. Posed portraits have their place, but the best images come from genuine interaction.

Maternity clients should wear something that makes them feel beautiful and allows movement — long dresses and flowing fabrics photograph wonderfully. For newborns, keep the house cozy, have a feeding ready, and don’t stress about tidying every room. Senior clients, wear what you love and bring a second outfit if you want variety.

Style you can count on

I shoot with a Nikon Z6III paired with fast prime lenses, which means I can chase natural light without dragging a studio setup into the field. My editing approach is clean, warm, and honest — skin tones that look like real skin, colors that match what your eyes actually saw, and a finish that feels timeless rather than trendy. I don’t oversaturate, I don’t orange-wash, and I don’t turn everything moody and desaturated. What you get is true-to-life beauty with a polished touch. Every gallery includes a curated selection of black and white edits, because some moments are just meant to live without color.

Seasonal rhythm across Hyrum

Spring in Hyrum brings green pastures and wildflowers along the foothills — a gorgeous time for maternity and couples sessions. Summer is prime for everything: the reservoir is full, the light lasts late, and the meadows toward Hardware Ranch are at their peak. Fall is when Cache Valley really shows off — golden cottonwoods along the Little Bear River, warm afternoon light, and cooler temperatures that make everyone more comfortable in front of the camera. Winter brings snow-covered mountains and quieter landscapes that work beautifully for intimate sessions and in-home newborn work. Every season has its strengths here, and I plan around them.

Quick answers for curious people

  • How far in advance should I book? Two to four weeks for most sessions; weddings, three to six months.
  • What if it rains? We reschedule at no cost. Overcast skies, though, are some of my favorite conditions.
  • How many final images will I receive? Depends on session length, typically 30 to 80 fully edited images.
  • Do you offer albums or prints? Yes. Lab-calibrated prints, canvases, and heirloom albums are available through your gallery.
  • Can we bring our pet? Absolutely. Leash for safety, treats for bribery, and patience for everyone.
