Looking for a Payson photographer? I’m Jen Kunz, and I have a real soft spot for this town. Payson has character — like, genuine, lived-in, this-place-has-stories character. The historic downtown, the temple on the hill, Loafer Mountain standing guard behind everything — it all adds up to a place that photographs beautifully without trying. I drive about an hour from South Weber to get here, and I always leave thinking the same thing: Payson doesn’t get enough credit. Let’s fix that with some incredible photos.

Payson — history, mountains, and that small-town thing money can’t buy

Payson sits at the south end of Utah Valley with Loafer Mountain rising dramatically behind it and the valley spreading out to the north. It’s got a historic downtown that still feels like a real downtown — not a tourist version of one. The Peteetneet Museum is gorgeous. The older neighborhoods have big trees and wide sidewalks. And the Payson Temple? That building is something else, especially in the evening light when the stone glows warm against a darkening sky.

There’s also a grit to Payson that I appreciate. This is a working town. It’s got the Onion Days heritage, agricultural roots, and a community that shows up for each other. That groundedness translates into sessions — people here are real, unpretentious, and fun to photograph. Between the downtown, the foothills, Payson Lakes (when the road opens), and all the open space south of town, I have endless options for where to shoot. Every session here feels a little different, and that’s exactly how I like it.

What I photograph in Payson

Families

Family sessions in Payson have this warmth to them that I can’t quite explain. Maybe it’s the town itself rubbing off. We’ll find the right spot — a park, a quiet street with big trees, the open fields south of town with the mountains behind, or even your own property if you’ve got land (and a lot of Payson families do). Then I’ll let your family be your family while I capture it. The silly stuff. The tender stuff. The kid who won’t stop spinning. That’s what you’ll actually want on your walls — not stiff smiles. The real thing.

Weddings & Elopements

As a Payson photographer for weddings, I get to work with some genuinely unique settings. The Payson Temple for formals. The canyon for an elopement that feels like you’re the only two people on earth. Backyard receptions under string lights with Loafer Mountain catching the last glow of sunset. My approach is documentary — I’m there to witness and capture, not to direct your day. The real emotion is always better than anything I could stage. See my wedding photography page for more on what that looks like.

Maternity

There are these open fields on the outskirts of Payson — mountain backdrop, golden grass, big sky — that make for breathtaking maternity sessions. I love shooting maternity between 28 and 34 weeks, when the bump is beautifully prominent and you can still move comfortably. Bring a dress that flows. The mountain breeze handles the rest. (Payson sunsets from the right angle are unreal, by the way. We’ll time it so you’re backlit by the last warm light of the day.)

Newborns

Newborn sessions happen at your home. You’ve just had a baby, and I’m not about to ask you to pack up and drive somewhere. I bring simple wraps, use your home’s window light, and let your baby run the show. Feed, sleep, photograph. Repeat as needed. The tiny details are everything right now — those little lips, the way they grip your finger, the sleepy stretch. Siblings and parents are always included. This is about your whole family, right here, right now.

Senior Pictures

Payson seniors have some of the coolest backdrop options around. Historic downtown for texture and character. The foothills for wide-open mountain drama. Payson Lakes (summer/fall) for something completely different. I build every senior session around you — your sport, your art, your vibe. Two to three outfit changes, locations that match your personality, and photos that actually look like you. Not generic yearbook stuff. The real you.

Branding & Headshots

Payson’s got a growing business community, and if you need professional photos that don’t look corporate and cold, I’m your person. Headshots, lifestyle branding, product shots — all done with natural light and real settings. Clean, warm, approachable. The kind of imagery that makes people trust you before they’ve even met you.

Planning your Payson session

  • What to wear: Soft, natural tones — dusty blue, cream, terra cotta, sage, warm brown. The Payson landscape has warm, earthy tones especially in summer and fall, so clothes that complement rather than compete work best. Coordinate as a family; skip the matching outfits.
  • Timing: Loafer Mountain creates interesting light patterns in Payson — the sun dips behind the western hills while the mountain to the east still catches color. I plan timing specifically for this area so we get the best possible light. Trust me on the clock.
  • Kids and reality: Bring snacks. Let them be kids. I’m not trying to get your three-year-old to sit perfectly still for 45 minutes. (Nobody should.) The running, the goofiness, the genuine giggles — that’s the good stuff, and I know how to capture it.
  • Move, don’t pose: I give direction, but it’s more like suggestions. Walk together. Throw your kid in the air. Kiss your partner’s forehead. The best images come from actual connection, not rehearsed positioning.

What my photography actually looks like

I shoot with a Nikon Z6III and fast prime lenses, natural light always. My editing is clean, warm, and honest — real colors, real skin tones, no heavy filters that’ll look dated in two years. Every gallery includes black and white edits because some moments hit harder without color. I’m going for timeless. Photos that your grandkids will look at and think “wow, they look happy” — not “wow, that filter is so 2026.”

Payson through the seasons

Spring in Payson is green creeping up Loafer Mountain while the peak still holds snow. The orchards and fields come alive, the air smells like fresh-cut grass and possibility, and the light gets better by the week. Summer is warm and golden — long evenings, dramatic afternoon clouds building over the mountains, and that dry mountain air that makes everything feel crisp even when it’s hot. Fall is when Payson really shows off. Loafer Mountain goes orange and red, the fields turn gold, the light drops lower and warmer, and every session feels like it’s wrapped in a blanket. Winter brings quiet — snow on the temple, frosted farmland, bare trees against grey skies. It’s moody and beautiful in its own right.

Common questions

  • How far ahead should I schedule? Two to four weeks for regular sessions. Weddings — three to six months minimum, earlier for fall dates.
  • What happens if it rains? We reschedule, no charge. Overcast skies though? Some of my best work happens under cloud cover. The light is soft, even, and incredibly flattering.
  • How many edited photos will I get? Typically 30 to 80, depending on session type and length.
  • Do you photograph in other south Utah County areas? Absolutely. I’m regularly in Mapleton, Salem, Santaquin, and everywhere in between.
  • Can I bring my dog? One hundred percent. Leash for safety, treats for bribery. Pets are always welcome.
  • Prints and albums? Lab-quality prints, canvases, and heirloom albums — all available through your online gallery.
