Looking for a South Salt Lake photographer? You’ve found one. I’m Jen Kunz, and I photograph families, seniors, maternity sessions, newborns, weddings, and branding work throughout South Salt Lake and the central valley. South Salt Lake is one of the most underrated spots in the metro area — it’s got grit, character, and a creative energy that’s been building for years. Between the growing arts scene along State Street, the industrial-chic architecture, proximity to Sugar House and Liberty Park, and the Jordan River Parkway running right through, this city offers a range of photographic settings you won’t find in cookie-cutter suburbs. I make the drive down from Ogden regularly (about 30 minutes on I-15), and South Salt Lake’s unique personality makes every session here feel different from the last.
Why South Salt Lake has so much to offer
South Salt Lake sits between downtown SLC and the Murray/Midvale corridor, and it’s carved out its own identity. The Central Pointe TRAX station area is modernizing fast, but you still get pockets of older Salt Lake character — brick warehouses, murals, industrial textures that give photographs an urban edge you can’t fake. Head east and you’re touching the Sugar House neighborhood with its parks and tree-lined streets. The Jordan River Parkway runs along the western side, offering green, natural backdrops just blocks from urban grit. That contrast is what makes South Salt Lake special for photography.
I also regularly photograph in neighboring Murray, Midvale, and the greater Salt Lake City area. These central valley communities overlap naturally, and I know the best spots across all of them to match whatever look and feel you’re going for.
What I photograph in South Salt Lake
Families
Family sessions in South Salt Lake give me options that range from urban cool to parkside natural. The Jordan River Parkway for tree-lined, riverside settings. Fitts Park or Central Park for open lawns and playground energy. Or the textured streets near State and 3300 South for families who want something with more character and edge. I focus on what’s real between you — the way your kid hangs off your arm, the look between parents when something funny happens, the genuine chaos and tenderness that makes your family yours. We’ll get the group shot, but the ones you’ll love most are the ones that feel alive.
Weddings & Elopements
As a South Salt Lake photographer who covers weddings across the Wasatch Front, I appreciate the unique venue options in this area. The industrial-chic spaces along State Street and the 3300 South corridor lend themselves to modern, editorial-style wedding photography. For elopements, the nearby Wasatch canyons are minutes away, and Liberty Park offers an urban garden setting that’s timelessly beautiful. I approach every wedding with calm, documentary energy — capturing what’s real rather than choreographing what isn’t.
Maternity
South Salt Lake’s variety works beautifully for maternity sessions. For something natural and soft, the Jordan River Parkway provides cottonwood canopy and gentle river light. For something more modern and editorial, the industrial backdrops along the State Street corridor create images with real style and edge. Sessions work best between 28 and 34 weeks. Bring a gown that flows and highlights your belly — whatever backdrop we choose, the combination of beautiful light and a beautiful moment makes the images extraordinary.
Newborns
For South Salt Lake newborn sessions, I come to your home. New parents have enough on their plate without organizing a photo outing with a days-old baby. I bring simple wraps and minimal props, work with whatever natural light your space offers, and move entirely at your baby’s pace. Feeds, diaper changes, nap breaks — all part of the flow. The images focus on tiny details that change so fast: curled fingers, downy hair, the way your newborn sleeps against your chest. Parents and siblings are always included.
Senior Pictures
South Salt Lake seniors have access to some of the most diverse backdrops in the valley. Industrial textures and murals for edgy, urban portraits. Sugar House Park for classic greenery. The Jordan River trail for something natural. Or head up to the foothills for mountain drama. I build every senior session around your personality — your sport, your art, your vibe. Senior photos should feel like a snapshot of who you actually are at this moment in your life, not a generic template.
Real Estate & Branding
South Salt Lake’s commercial corridor is growing fast, and professional imagery helps businesses and real estate listings stand out in a competitive market. Whether you need real estate photography for a renovated bungalow or a new mixed-use development, headshots for your practice, or lifestyle branding images for your creative business, I bring clean composition, honest lighting, and imagery that presents your work as professional and approachable. No corporate sterility — just polished and real.
South Salt Lake photo locations and when they shine
South Salt Lake and the surrounding central valley give me a fantastic range of options. Here are some of my favorites:
| Location | Look & Feel | Best Time |
|---|---|---|
| Jordan River Parkway (South Salt Lake section) | Cottonwood-lined river trail, natural greenery, peaceful feel | Spring through fall, morning or golden hour |
| Fitts Park | Mature trees, open lawn, community feel, mountain backdrop east | Spring through fall, late afternoon |
| State Street corridor (industrial areas) | Brick, murals, metal textures, urban character and grit | Year-round, overcast or golden hour |
| Sugar House Park (adjacent neighborhood) | Rolling hills, pond, established trees, classic Salt Lake park | Year-round, golden hour |
| Central Pointe area | Modern mixed-use, TRAX station architecture, clean urban lines | Year-round, evening light |
| Liberty Park (nearby) | Historic park, pond, gardens, wide lawns, iconic Salt Lake setting | Spring through fall, morning or evening |
This is just the starting point. South Salt Lake’s character comes from its variety — polished and rough, green and urban, all within a few blocks of each other. If you have a meaningful spot you’d like to include, I’m all for it.
Planning your session
- Wardrobe that photographs well: Soft, muted tones are your best friend — dusty blue, sage, cream, terra cotta, warm grey. For urban backdrops, darker tones and denim also work great. Avoid neon, large logos, and busy patterns. Coordinate without matching.
- Timing that flatters: Central valley light is beautiful at golden hour, and the Wasatch Mountains to the east create dramatic shadow play as the sun sets. I set timing based on season and location.
- Kids, snacks, sanity: Snacks are mandatory. A small toy for transitions helps. And the golden rule: let them be kids. The running, twirling, silly moments are always the ones parents love most.
- Movement over stiffness: Walk toward me, spin your partner, toss your kid gently. Real interaction makes for real photographs. I provide direction, but loosely — genuine beats rehearsed every time.
For maternity sessions, a flowing gown works beautifully against the Jordan River backdrop, or go fitted and modern against an urban wall. Newborn sessions need only a warm house and a fed baby. Seniors should bring two or three outfits and share their personality so I can pick the perfect locations.
My style and approach
I photograph with a Nikon Z6III and fast prime lenses, relying on natural light for nearly every session. My editing is clean, warm, and honest — no heavy filters, no fake skin tones, no oversaturated skies. Colors look true. Skin looks like skin. Every gallery includes black and white edits because some moments hit harder stripped down to light and shadow. My goal is timeless photography — images that feel as powerful and true ten years from now as they do the day you receive them.
Seasons in the central Salt Lake Valley
Spring in South Salt Lake brings blooming trees, green parkways, and the contrast of lingering snow on the Wasatch above a warming valley floor. Summer means long, golden evenings, warm light that lingers past nine, and outdoor energy everywhere. Fall turns the cottonwoods along the Jordan River brilliant yellow and the foothills amber and rust — the whole valley glows. Winter brings quiet beauty: snow on the mountains visible from every block, frosted mornings, and clean, sharp light that makes the urban textures really pop. Each season transforms what’s available, and I plan every session around what the current one offers.
Frequently asked questions
- How far in advance should I book? Two to four weeks for most sessions. Weddings, three to six months. Fall fills up fastest, so early booking is smart.
- What if the weather turns? We reschedule at no cost. Overcast days are actually ideal for photography — soft, diffused light with no squinting or harsh shadows.
- How many images will I receive? Typically 30 to 80 fully edited images depending on session length, delivered through an online gallery.
- Do you offer prints and albums? Yes. Lab-calibrated prints, canvases, and heirloom albums are available through your gallery.
- Can we bring our pet? Please do. Leash for safety, treats for bribery, patience for everyone. Dogs at photo sessions are always a good idea.
- Do you charge a travel fee from Ogden? No. South Salt Lake is within my regular service area — no travel fees or added charges.
