Need an American Fork photographer? You just found one. I’m Jen Kunz — mom of four, Utah lifer, and photographer who genuinely can’t stop talking about American Fork Canyon. I drive down from South Weber regularly to photograph families, weddings, engagements, maternity sessions, newborns, seniors, and branding work in American Fork and the surrounding area. This town punches way above its weight when it comes to photo locations, and I’m here for it.

American Fork has the canyon. That’s already enough.

Let’s just address this right up front. American Fork Canyon is one of the most beautiful places to photograph in the entire state of Utah. I’ve shot all over — Logan Canyon, the Ogden Valley, Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood — and AF Canyon holds its own against any of them. The road winding up past Timpanogos Cave, the groves of aspen and pine, the creek running alongside the road, the way the light filters through the trees at 7 PM in July… I could photograph there every single week and never get bored.

But American Fork isn’t just the canyon. The town itself has this small-city feel that I really like. Main Street has character. Art Duff Park is a gem that not enough people know about. The neighborhoods on the east bench back right up to the mountains. And you’re centrally located in Utah County, which means your friends and family in Lehi, Pleasant Grove, and Orem are all within ten minutes.

Family sessions in American Fork

American Fork families, I see you. The after-school chaos, the weekend soccer tournaments, the “we really need family photos but who has time” reality. I get it. My family photography is designed to be fun, easy, and real. No stiff posing. No forcing anyone to smile. Just your family being your family while I grab the moments that matter.

Art Duff Park is one of my favorite spots in AF — big trees, open grass, enough variety for a full session without moving your car. The canyon is the show-stopper when you want drama and nature and the kind of backdrop that makes people ask “WHERE was that taken?” For something more casual and close to home, the trails along the AF river corridor are pretty and low-key.

Kids don’t need to be perfect. In fact, the less perfect, the better. The kid running away from you? That’s a great photo. The toddler making a face? Even better. I know how to work with little ones because I have four of my own. Trust the process.

Weddings and elopements

American Fork Canyon elopements are kind of having a moment, and honestly, they deserve it. Imagine exchanging vows surrounded by aspens with nothing but mountain and sky behind you. As an American Fork wedding photographer, I’ve done exactly that — and it never gets old.

For larger weddings, AF has great venue access, and the canyon is always right there for portraits. The Timpanogos Cave area (lower parking lot and trailhead) gives you massive mountain drama for couple shots. Downtown American Fork has some spots with historic brick character if you want variety. And the temples in Orem and Lehi are both a short drive away.

My wedding style is documentary at the core — I capture what’s happening, not what I staged. Quick creative portraits when we steal five minutes, but the priority is always the real emotions, the real details, the real day.

Maternity — mountains, meadows, or both

American Fork Canyon is one of the best spots in the valley for maternity photos. The meadows partway up the canyon, the creek-side pull-offs, the aspen groves — they all create this sense of beauty and peace that mirrors what this time in your life should feel like. (Even if right now it mostly feels like heartburn and swollen ankles. I remember.)

We’ll schedule between 28 and 34 weeks. I’ll find us a spot with gorgeous light, you’ll wear something that makes you feel beautiful, and I’ll make sure you look as incredible as you feel should be documented. Because growing a human is a big deal, and you deserve photos that show it.

Newborns at home

For newborn sessions in American Fork, I drive to you. New parents don’t need one more errand. Your home, your baby’s schedule, zero pressure. I bring simple wraps, work with window light, and let your newborn run the show (which, honestly, they already are). Tiny details, family together, the quiet beauty of the first days. Best within the first two weeks.

Senior portraits

AF seniors — the canyon is your playground for senior portraits. Mountain scenery, creek settings, aspen backdrops that turn gold in September — it’s all right there. But we’re not limited to nature. Main Street American Fork has texture and character. A nearby field at sunset gives you that wide-open golden-hour look. I plan every session around YOU — your interests, your style, your vibe.

Bring a couple outfits. Tell me what matters to you. Let’s make senior photos you’ll actually want to show people. Not the awkward ones your parents made you take. Real ones.

Branding and headshots

American Fork’s business community is growing fast — especially with the tech corridor energy spilling over from Lehi. If you need professional photos that go beyond the LinkedIn selfie, I create branding imagery that shows who you are in context. Your workspace, your product, your process. Clean, honest, professional without being sterile. The kind of photos that make someone click “learn more” instead of scrolling past.

American Fork locations and timing

Location Look & Feel Best Time
American Fork Canyon (lower & mid sections) Mountain drama, creek, aspens, pine forest, meadows Late spring through fall, golden hour (peak aspen color mid-September)
Timpanogos Cave trailhead area Dramatic mountain walls, rocky terrain, alpine feel Summer and early fall, morning or evening light
Art Duff Park Large trees, green grass, shaded areas, family-friendly Spring through fall, late afternoon
Main Street American Fork Small-town character, brick facades, walkable Year-round, golden hour or overcast
East bench neighborhoods / mountain base Mountain-close, clean landscaping, quiet streets Year-round, evening light

The canyon alone has probably twenty different spots I rotate through depending on season and light. If you know a spot you love — a trail, a park, your own backyard — I’m all for it. The best location is the one that means something to you.

Session prep

  • Clothing: Earthy, soft tones — sage, cream, dusty blue, rust, warm grey. Nothing neon, nothing with huge logos. Families: coordinate without twinning.
  • Light: I time everything for golden hour. American Fork Canyon’s light is particularly good because the narrow canyon funnels it in the most gorgeous way. Trust me — show up at the time I tell you, and you’ll see.
  • Kids: Snacks are mandatory. Patience is mandatory. Letting them be themselves is mandatory. I handle the rest.
  • Relax: Walk, laugh, hold each other. The best photos come from real interaction. I give direction, but I keep it loose because genuine always beats posed.

What I shoot and how I edit

Nikon Z6III, natural light, fast prime lenses. My editing is warm, clean, and honest. No orange skin. No blown-out skies. No filters that’ll look dated next year. Every gallery includes black and white edits. I want your images to be timeless — the kind that look just as good on your wall in twenty years as they do today.
