So you’re looking for a Provo photographer. Good news — you found one who actually loves the drive down. I’m Jen Kunz, and I photograph families, weddings, engagements, maternity sessions, newborns, seniors, and branding work all over Provo and the north end of Utah County. Provo’s got this energy that’s hard to describe — it’s a college town, sure, but it’s also got Provo Canyon right there, Utah Lake spreading out to the west, and neighborhoods full of young families who are building their lives in real time. I make the trip down from South Weber because this city gives me so much to work with. Every single time.

Why I keep coming back to Provo

Here’s the thing about Provo. It’s got layers. You’ve got the BYU campus with its manicured lawns and old stone buildings. You’ve got Center Street with all that small-town charm packed into a downtown that’s actually walkable. Then you drive ten minutes east and you’re in Provo Canyon, where the light filters through cottonwoods and the Provo River runs right alongside you. Head west instead and it’s wide-open Utah Lake shoreline with sunsets that honestly make me forget I’ve been driving for an hour.

I’ve shot in Provo in every season at this point, and each one feels like a different city. Spring is blossoms everywhere — the flowering trees along University Avenue are ridiculous. Summer evenings in Rock Canyon Park go on forever because the sun takes its sweet time dropping behind the mountains. Fall in Provo Canyon? Don’t even get me started. The reds and oranges up Squaw Peak Road are some of the best color I’ve seen anywhere in Utah, and I’ve photographed in a LOT of Utah. Winter brings snow-dusted Y Mountain and quiet campus walks that feel like a movie set.

I also work with families in Orem, American Fork, and all over the north end of Utah County. Provo is just the anchor — the city where everything seems to start.

Families — the real, messy, beautiful kind

Family photography in Provo is probably my most-booked session type down here, and honestly, it makes sense. This city is FULL of young families. Babies on hips, toddlers running wild, older kids who think they’re too cool for photos (spoiler: they’re not). I specialize in the kind of family photography where nobody looks stiff and everyone looks like themselves.

Rock Canyon Park is one of my go-to spots — the trees create this beautiful canopy, and the grass stays green well into October. The trails heading up into Rock Canyon itself give you drama if you want it. For something more urban, Center Street has texture and character without feeling forced. And if your family is the outdoorsy type, a session starting at the mouth of Provo Canyon gives us river rocks, wildflowers, and mountain views all in one frame.

My approach is simple: I give you just enough direction to look great, and then I let your family do their thing. The tickle fights, the piggyback rides, the moment your three-year-old says something hilarious — those are the shots that end up framed.

Weddings and elopements in Provo

I’ve been a Provo wedding photographer for enough seasons now to know this city inside and out on a wedding day. Provo Canyon is an obvious choice for ceremonies — the scenery does most of the heavy lifting. Sundance is up that same canyon and honestly, if you’re doing a Sundance wedding, you already know how gorgeous it is. I just make sure the photos match.

Downtown Provo has grown into a legit wedding destination too. The venues around Center Street have this mix of historic and modern that photographs beautifully. I’ve shot everything from 200-guest receptions to elopements on the lake shore where it was just the couple, an officiant, and me. Every single one was perfect in its own way.

My style on wedding days is documentary first, creative portraits when we steal a few minutes. I don’t manufacture moments. I catch them. And I move fast enough that you never miss cocktail hour for photos.

Maternity sessions — Provo does this so well

There’s something about maternity photography against Provo’s backdrop that just works. The scale of the mountains behind you, Utah Lake stretching out, the canyon framing you in green — it all creates this feeling of possibility. Which is kind of exactly what this season of life is about, right?

I typically schedule Provo maternity sessions between 28 and 34 weeks. We’ll pick a spot based on what you’re drawn to — dramatic canyon scenery, soft lakeside light, or something urban downtown. Bring a dress that shows off your belly (flowing fabric photographs like a dream against these backdrops), and I’ll handle the posing. I promise you’ll feel beautiful. That’s non-negotiable.

Newborns — I come to you

Listen. You just had a baby. The last thing you need is to load up a car seat, a diaper bag, three changes of clothes, and somehow look presentable while driving across town. So I don’t make you do that. For newborn sessions in Provo, I come to your home. Simple wraps, natural window light, and the pace set entirely by your baby. Fed? Sleeping? Great, we shoot. Fussy? We pause. No stress.

The images focus on those tiny details that change so fast — curled toes, little fingers wrapped around yours, the way they sleep in positions that look impossible. Parents and siblings are absolutely part of it. This is about your whole family in this brand-new chapter. Best timing is within the first two weeks.

Senior portraits that actually look like you

Provo seniors have options that most Utah cities can’t touch. BYU campus gives you architecture, texture, and ivy-covered walls. (Even if you’re heading to the U — I won’t tell.) Rock Canyon and Squaw Peak Road deliver mountain drama. Downtown brings color and personality. And senior portraits at Utah Lake give you that wide-open, golden-hour vibe that looks incredible in a graduation slideshow.

I plan every senior session around who YOU are. Your sport, your art, your style — it all matters. Bring two or three outfits, tell me your vibe, and I’ll build a session that feels authentically yours. These should be photos you actually want to post, not ones that look like everyone else’s.

Branding and professional headshots

Provo’s tech scene and small business community have been growing like crazy, and a lot of those entrepreneurs need photos that aren’t just a headshot against a white wall. As a Provo photographer who works with local brands, I create images that show who you are and what you do — in context. Your office, your studio, your coffee shop, your process. Real images that build trust because they look real.

Whether you’re launching a startup near the Adobe campus, running a shop on Center Street, or building a brand from your home office, professional imagery makes the difference between “I should look into that” and someone actually clicking. Clean, honest, approachable — that’s what I deliver.

Provo locations and when they shine

Location Look & Feel Best Time
Rock Canyon Park Tree canopy, green grass, canyon mouth drama, mountain backdrop Spring through fall, golden hour
Provo Canyon / Squaw Peak Road River, cottonwoods, dramatic fall color, winding road with pull-offs Fall (peak color), summer evenings, spring green-up
BYU Campus (Maeser Building, library quad) Historic stone, ivy, lawns, academic architecture Year-round, golden hour or overcast
Center Street downtown Brick facades, murals, small-town character, walkable Year-round, late afternoon
Utah Lake (Provo Marina / lakeshore trail) Wide-open water, massive sky, soft sand, sunset reflections Summer and fall, sunset
Sundance Resort area Alpine meadows, aspens, rustic mountain charm Summer wildflowers, fall aspens, winter snow

Honestly, this table could be three times as long. Provo has so many spots I keep finding new ones. If you’ve got a place that means something to you — your first apartment, the trail you hike every weekend, the park where your kids play — I’d love to shoot there. The best locations are the ones with a story.

Session tips (the stuff that actually helps)

  • What to wear: Soft, earthy tones — think dusty blue, sage, cream, warm grey, terra cotta. Skip neon, big logos, and anything you’d have to keep adjusting. Coordinate with your family but don’t all wear the same outfit. (Please.)
  • Golden hour is everything: Provo’s golden hour is spectacular because the valley catches light differently than up north. I time every session for the best light, and that usually means starting about an hour before sunset.
  • Kids and snacks: Bring snacks. Bring backup snacks. Bring the emergency fruit snacks you swore you’d never use. A fed kid is a cooperative kid, and I know how to work with toddlers who’d rather climb things than smile at a camera.
  • Just be yourselves: Walk, hug, spin someone around. Real interaction beats posed smiles every time. I’ll guide you, but loosely — the magic happens when you stop thinking about the camera.

What you’ll get from me

I shoot with a Nikon Z6III and fast prime lenses. Natural light, always. My editing style is clean and warm — real colors, real skin tones, nothing trendy that’ll look dated in five years. Every gallery includes black and white edits because some moments just hit harder without color. I want your images to look as good hanging on your wall in 2040 as they do on your phone today.

Frequently asked questions

  • How far ahead should I book? Most sessions, two to four weeks is perfect. Weddings and fall mini-sessions, book three to six months out — those fill fast.
  • What if the weather’s bad? Rain means we reschedule, no charge. Overcast skies are actually amazing for photos — even, soft light with no harsh shadows. I might secretly hope for clouds.
  • How many photos do I get? Depends on the session, but typically 30 to 80 fully edited images. Quality over quantity, always.
  • Do you travel to Provo for every session? Yes! I drive down from the Ogden area and I’m in Utah County regularly. No travel fee for Provo sessions.
  • Can we bring our dog? Please do. Leash for safety, treats for bribery, and patience for the chaos. Some of my favorite images ever have involved dogs who refused to cooperate.
  • What about prints and albums? Absolutely. I offer lab-calibrated prints, canvases, and heirloom albums through your online gallery. The quality difference between pro prints and drugstore prints is night and day.
