Utah Family Photographer

Looking for a Utah family photographer who actually knows how to work with kids, toddlers, and that one family member who “hates having their picture taken”?

I’m Jen — a family portrait photographer based in South Weber, Utah, and I specialize in making family sessions feel easy, natural, and even fun.

I’ve photographed hundreds of families across the Wasatch Front — from brand-new babies to multi-generational groups with twenty-plus people — and every single session reminds me why I love what I do. My style is warm, candid, and real.

No stiff department-store posing. No fake smiles. Just your family, being your family, in a beautiful place. If you want family photos that look like you, let’s set something up.

Why family photography matters

Here’s the thing about family life — it changes constantly. The baby who just learned to walk is suddenly starting kindergarten. The teenager who used to ride on your shoulders is now taller than you. Your parents are getting older.

The dog is getting grayer. And one day you’ll look back and wish you had more photos from right now — not selfies on your phone, but real portraits that show who your family is in this season.

I hear it all the time from parents: “I wish we hadn’t waited so long.” And I get it — life is busy, schedules are chaos, and someone always has a black eye or a missing tooth.

But here’s what I’ve learned after years of photographing families: those imperfections are the good stuff. The gap-toothed grin. The toddler who refuses to look at the camera. The teenager who rolls their eyes and then cracks up laughing.

That’s your family. That’s what you want to remember.

Family photography isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection. The way your toddler grabs your face with both hands. The way your teenager still leans into dad when they think no one’s watching.

The genuine laugh that happens when someone cracks a joke right before I click the shutter. That’s the good stuff. That’s what ends up framed on your wall ten years from now.

Don’t wait for the “perfect time.” There isn’t one. The best time for family photos is whenever you realize you want them — and usually, that means right now.

What to expect at your family session

I want your family session to feel like hanging out — not a rigid, stressful photo shoot where everyone’s miserable by the end. Here’s how it works from start to finish, and why my families keep coming back year after year.

Before the session

Once you book, I’ll send you a prep guide with tips on what to wear, how to coordinate without being too matchy, and how to prep your kids so they’re excited (not anxious).

We’ll pick a location together based on the look you want — mountain views, urban vibes, golden fields, wildflower meadows, or something else entirely.

I’ll also walk you through timing so we catch the best light, because Utah golden hour is a real thing and it makes a massive difference.

If you have questions about wrangling toddlers, dealing with a reluctant teenager, or coordinating outfits for twelve people, I’ve been through all of it. Ask me anything.

During the session

Most family sessions last about 60 to 90 minutes, which gives us plenty of time for full family groupings, smaller combinations (just the kids, just the parents, siblings together, grandparents with grandkids), and individual portraits if you want them. I guide you into natural poses and prompts — things like walking together, whispering secrets, tickle attacks, piggyback rides — that bring out genuine expressions instead of forced smiles.

For the little ones, I bring patience, silly sounds, and a whole arsenal of tricks to get real smiles and genuine giggles. If your toddler needs a snack break or your baby needs to nurse, we take it. There’s no rush and no stress.

Some of the best shots happen in between the “official” poses anyway — when everyone relaxes and stops trying so hard. That’s when the magic happens.

After the session

Your fully edited gallery is delivered within 2 to 3 weeks. Every photo is individually edited for color, light, and tone — no batch presets, no one-size-fits-all filters.

You’ll get a private online gallery where you can download high-resolution images, share with family, and order prints, canvases, and albums. Most family sessions include 40 to 80+ edited images depending on session length and group size.

Where we shoot

One of the best parts of living in Utah? The locations. I’ve been shooting family sessions across the Wasatch Front for years, and I’ve got a mental catalog of spots for every vibe, season, family size, and energy level (because yes, that matters when you’ve got four kids under six).

Some of my go-to family photography locations:

  • Wheeler Farm (Murray) — Rustic barns, open fields, and lots of space for kids to run around between posed shots. Especially great for fall sessions.
  • Ogden’s East Bench foothills — Sweeping valley views with mountain backdrops and gorgeous sunset light. One of my absolute favorites for families.
  • Big Cottonwood Canyon — Forested trails, creek beds, and dappled light that’s pure magic in summer and fall. The green canopy creates a natural studio.
  • Liberty Park (Salt Lake City) — Tree-lined paths and urban charm for families who want something less rustic and more city-chic.
  • Bonneville Shoreline Trail — Overlooking the valley with desert grasses, sagebrush, and wildflowers in season. Wide open and beautiful.
  • Causey Reservoir — Mountain lake setting that’s especially stunning with fall colors reflecting off the water.
  • North Ogden Divide — Meadows, wildflowers, and mountain views that are breathtaking in July and August.
  • Your own backyard or home — Lifestyle sessions at home are some of my favorites, especially with little ones. Your space, your comfort, your story. Pillow fights, kitchen dancing, backyard sprinklers — it all makes for incredible, authentic images.

I’m always open to new locations too. If you have a meaningful spot — grandma’s property, the park where you got engaged, your favorite canyon, the family cabin — I’d love to shoot there.

Investment

Family session pricing varies depending on family size, location, and session length. Whether it’s just the four of you at a local park or a big extended family gathering in the mountains, I’ll build a session that fits.

Every session includes all fully edited images delivered in a private online gallery — no per-photo charges, no print minimums, no hidden fees. You get everything from the session, and every image is individually edited with care.

I’d love to put together a quote that fits your family. Reach out here or visit my pricing page for current information.

Whether it’s an annual family portrait tradition or your first session in years, I’ll make sure everyone looks great and actually has a good time doing it.

Many families come back year after year, and it’s one of my favorite things — watching kids grow up through their annual sessions. There’s something really special about building that visual timeline of your family’s story.

Frequently asked questions

  • What if my kids won’t cooperate? Welcome to every family session ever. Seriously — I expect it, I’m prepared for it, and I’m really good at working with kids of all ages. Snack breaks, silly prompts, games, and a whole lot of patience go a long way. Some of my best images come from the “uncooperative” moments. That grumpy toddler face? It’s adorable in a photo, even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment.
  • What should we wear? I’ll send you a detailed style guide when you book. The short version: coordinate colors and textures without being too matchy. Think complementary tones — not everyone in white shirts and jeans. Earth tones, jewel tones, muted pastels, and layered textures tend to photograph beautifully. Mix it up with different shades within the same color family for a cohesive but natural look.
  • When is the best time of year for family photos? Fall is the most popular season in Utah (September through early November) because the colors are incredible and the light is warm. But honestly, every season has something to offer. Spring wildflowers, summer mountain greens, and even winter snow sessions can be absolutely stunning. I shoot year-round.
  • How long does the session last? Most family sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. Larger extended family groups may need a bit more time, which we’ll plan for in advance. I never rush — we go at your family’s pace.
  • Can we include our pets? Absolutely. Dogs, cats, horses — I’ve photographed families with all kinds of furry (and not so furry) members. Your pets are family too, so bring them along.
  • How many edited photos will we receive? Most family sessions include 40 to 80+ fully edited images. Extended family sessions and longer sessions may include more. Every image is individually edited — no presets, no batch processing.
