Looking for a West Valley City photographer? I’m Jen Kunz, and I photograph families, seniors, maternity sessions, newborns, weddings, and branding work throughout West Valley City and the west side of the Salt Lake Valley. West Valley is the second-largest city in Utah, and it’s one of the most diverse and dynamic communities along the Wasatch Front. Between the Oquirrh Mountains framing the western horizon, the sprawling parks, and the cultural energy of a city that’s always evolving, West Valley offers a range of photographic backdrops that surprise people who haven’t explored it. I make the drive down from Ogden (about 35 minutes on I-15), and I genuinely enjoy working in a city that feels real, lived-in, and full of character.

Why West Valley City is a great place to photograph

West Valley City stretches across the western half of the Salt Lake Valley, from the Bangerter Highway corridor out toward the Oquirrh foothills. It’s a big city with a lot of personality — the USANA Amphitheatre and Maverik Center bring major events, the Fairbourne Station and Valley Fair areas are adding modern development, and the residential neighborhoods range from established family communities to brand-new builds. What I love most about shooting here is the sky. The west valley is wide and open, and sunsets over the Oquirrhs are consistently some of the most dramatic I see anywhere along the Wasatch Front.

I also regularly photograph in neighboring West Jordan, Taylorsville, Kearns, and Magna. These west-valley communities share that same wide-open sky and mountain backdrop, and I know the best locations across all of them to make your images stand out.

What I photograph in West Valley City

Families

Family sessions in West Valley City are a joy. The parks here are spacious, the neighborhoods have real character, and west valley families bring an energy and warmth that shows up beautifully in photographs. I focus on capturing what’s genuine — the way your youngest refuses to let go of your hand, the moment your teenager actually laughs instead of performing for the camera, the look between partners that says everything without words. We’ll get the polished group portrait, but the images you’ll treasure most are the candid ones where your family was just being your family.

Weddings & Elopements

As a West Valley City photographer who covers weddings across the Wasatch Front, I value what this area brings to wedding photography. West Valley has reception venues and event spaces that range from elegant ballrooms to casual outdoor settings with mountain views. For elopements, the Oquirrh foothills offer private, dramatic backdrops, and the nearby Wasatch canyons are just a short drive east. My approach is calm and documentary — I’m there to capture your day as it unfolds, not to direct a production. The real moments are always the best ones.

Maternity

West Valley’s wide-open landscape and dramatic sunsets make it a beautiful setting for maternity portraits. I love finding a spot where the sky stretches out above you and the Oquirrh Mountains create a rugged, natural frame. The open fields and park spaces on the west side of the valley give maternity images a sense of space and possibility that mirrors the season you’re in. Sessions work best between 28 and 34 weeks. Bring a flowing gown, and the combination of that western light and your beautiful belly does the rest.

Newborns

For West Valley newborn sessions, I come to your home. There’s no reason to bundle up a brand-new baby and drive somewhere when I can bring everything to you. I arrive with simple wraps and minimal props, use the natural light from your windows, and work entirely at your baby’s pace. Feeds, fussing, diaper changes — all part of it. The images focus on the fleeting details: tiny eyelashes, curled toes, the way your newborn sleeps with total abandon. Parents and siblings are always part of the session — this is your family’s story.

Senior Pictures

West Valley seniors have access to a great variety of backdrops. The USANA Amphitheatre area for something dramatic and urban. Valley Fair Mall or Fairbourne Station for modern architectural lines. The open fields and foothills to the west for golden-hour landscapes. Or the parks and trails throughout the city for something natural and relaxed. I customize every senior session to who you are — your interests, your style, your energy. These photos should capture this moment in your life in a way that’s authentically you.

Real Estate & Branding

West Valley City’s real estate market is active and diverse, from starter homes to new construction developments. Professional photography helps listings and businesses cut through the noise. Whether you need real estate photos for a West Valley property, headshots for your local practice, or lifestyle branding imagery for your business, I deliver clean, well-composed images that present your work with clarity and professionalism. Polished but approachable — that’s the standard.

West Valley City photo locations and when they shine

West Valley City and the surrounding west valley give me a wide range of beautiful shooting locations. Here are some favorites:

Location Look & Feel Best Time
Centennial Park Large open lawns, playground, pavilions, family-friendly setting Spring through fall, golden hour
Rocky Mountain Raceway open space / west fields Wide-open desert landscape, unobstructed Oquirrh views, big sky Summer and fall, sunset
Valley Regional Park Pond, walking paths, mature trees, natural and peaceful Spring through fall, morning or late afternoon
Fairbourne Station area Modern mixed-use development, clean architectural lines, urban feel Year-round, golden hour or overcast
Oquirrh foothills (Copperton / Bacchus Highway area) Scrub oak, wildflowers in season, rugged mountain feel Late spring through early fall, evening light
Utah Cultural Celebration Center grounds Garden elements, cultural architecture, unique backdrops Year-round, afternoon or evening

This is just the beginning. West Valley’s biggest asset is space — wide views, open sky, and a landscape that catches light differently than the east side of the valley. If you have a meaningful location — your backyard, a favorite park, a family gathering spot — I’d love to incorporate it.

Planning your session

  • Wardrobe that photographs well: Soft, muted tones are ideal — dusty blue, sage, cream, terra cotta, warm grey. Avoid neon, large logos, and busy patterns. Coordinate without matching. Against West Valley’s open landscapes, earth tones look especially beautiful.
  • Timing that flatters: West Valley sunsets are among the best in the Salt Lake area because the Oquirrhs create a dramatic, close backdrop for the setting sun. I schedule sessions to capture that golden-hour magic based on the season.
  • Kids, snacks, sanity: Snacks are non-negotiable. A small toy or book for transition moments helps. Let them be kids — I know how to work with every age, and the wiggly, silly, running-away moments are always the ones that make parents smile biggest.
  • Movement over stiffness: Walk toward me, swing your kid around, lean into each other. Real interaction photographs better than rigid posing, every single time. I give gentle direction, but genuine always wins.

Maternity sessions look stunning in a flowing gown against West Valley’s wide-open sunset backdrop. Newborn sessions need just a warm house and a fed baby — I handle the rest. Seniors should bring two or three outfits and tell me their vibe so I can match locations to personality.

My style and approach

I photograph with a Nikon Z6III and fast prime lenses, relying on natural light for nearly every session. My editing is clean, warm, and honest — no heavy filters, no artificial skin tones, no oversaturated colors. What you see in your gallery is close to what was actually there, just refined. Every gallery includes black and white edits, because some moments carry more weight when stripped to light and shadow. My goal is timeless photography — images you’ll love as much in a decade as you do right now.

Seasons across West Valley City

Spring brings green grass, blooming trees, and the contrast of snow-capped Oquirrhs above a warming valley. Summer means golden fields, warm evening light that stretches past nine, and that wide western sky lighting up at sunset. Fall is gorgeous — scrub oak on the foothills turns amber and rust, the valley floor glows golden, and the air gets crisp enough to add a jacket to your session wardrobe. Winter brings snow-dusted peaks, frosty mornings, and a quiet beauty that makes the open landscape feel especially dramatic. Every season transforms what West Valley offers, and I plan sessions around what each one does best.

Frequently asked questions

  • How far in advance should I book? Two to four weeks for most sessions. Weddings, three to six months. Fall is my busiest season, so booking early helps secure your preferred date.

  • How many images will I receive? Typically 30 to 80 fully edited images depending on session length, delivered through an online gallery.
  • Do you offer prints and albums? Yes. Lab-calibrated prints, canvases, and heirloom albums available through your gallery.
  • Can we bring our dog? Absolutely. Leash for safety, treats for cooperation, and I guarantee at least one great shot of your pup.
