Looking for a Sandy photographer? I’m Jen Kunz, and I’d love to work with you. I photograph families, seniors, maternity sessions, newborns, weddings, and branding work throughout Sandy and the south end of the Salt Lake Valley. Sandy holds a special spot on my shooting map — it’s where the city meets the mountains in the most dramatic way, with the Wasatch Front rising right out of the neighborhoods along Wasatch Boulevard. I make the 40-minute drive down from Ogden because this area consistently delivers some of the most beautiful backdrops I work with anywhere along the Front.
Why Sandy is such a great place to photograph
Sandy sits at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon, and that geography shapes everything about shooting here. The mountains aren’t a distant backdrop — they’re right there, towering and immediate, catching light in ways that change by the minute during golden hour. The city itself blends suburban comfort with easy access to trails, parks, and canyon openings that give us an incredible range of settings within a short drive.
From the shops and restaurants along Historic Sandy to the wide-open spaces of Dimple Dell Regional Park, from the polished grounds near Sandy City Hall to the trailheads leading into the Cottonwood Canyons — Sandy gives me options that other cities simply can’t match. It’s that sweet spot where you get mountain grandeur without sacrificing convenience, and that combination shows up in every gallery I deliver from this area.
I also frequently work in nearby Draper, South Jordan, and Salt Lake City — all just minutes from Sandy.
What I photograph in Sandy
Families
Family sessions in Sandy are a treat because the settings are so varied. We can go for something natural in Dimple Dell’s wooded ravines, something polished at Cornerstone Park, or something dramatic with Little Cottonwood Canyon as the backdrop. I focus on real interactions — the way your daughter clings to your leg, the bear hug from dad, the sibling dynamic that’s equal parts chaos and affection. We’ll get the clean, everyone-looking group shot, but the images you’ll treasure most are the ones where your family was just being your family.
Weddings & Elopements
As a Sandy wedding photographer, I love the access this area provides. Reception venues along the Wasatch Boulevard corridor, ceremony sites near the canyon mouths, and elopement opportunities in Little Cottonwood Canyon that feel worlds away from the valley floor. Sandy weddings often combine the polish of a well-planned celebration with the raw beauty of the mountains just steps away. I work with a calm, documentary style — capturing the emotion, the details, and the moments between moments so you can be fully present on your day.
Maternity
Sandy’s mountain proximity creates maternity backdrops that are simply stunning. I love shooting along the trails near the mouth of Little Cottonwood or in the open meadows of Dimple Dell where the light stretches long and golden across the grass. Sessions are best between 28 and 34 weeks, and I’ll guide you through every pose. Bring a flowing dress or something fitted that celebrates your belly, and the landscape does the heavy lifting. This is about capturing the beauty and anticipation of this season in a setting that matches the magnitude of what you’re feeling.
Newborns
For newborn sessions in Sandy, I come to you. Your home is where the magic is — familiar, warm, and infinitely easier than loading a days-old baby into a car seat for a studio visit. I bring simple wraps and minimal props, work with your home’s natural light, and move entirely at your baby’s pace. The focus is on the tiny, fleeting details: the curl of small fingers, the peaceful expression of deep sleep, the way the baby fits perfectly against your shoulder. Parents and siblings are always part of the session because this moment belongs to your whole family.
Senior Pictures
Sandy seniors have some of the best backdrops in the valley at their doorstep. The Cottonwood Canyon openings for mountain drama, Historic Sandy for a downtown feel, the trails along the Bonneville Shoreline for something active and adventurous, or Dimple Dell for natural, wooded textures. Every senior session is built around your personality — your interests, your style, your energy. Bring two or three outfits, tell me what makes you tick, and I’ll plan locations that make the whole gallery feel like you.
Real Estate & Branding
Sandy’s growth as a business hub — anchored by the Silicon Slopes tech corridor and the South Towne area — means there’s strong demand for professional visual content. I work with entrepreneurs, real estate agents, and small business owners who need headshots, lifestyle branding imagery, or property photography that feels polished but genuine. Whether you’re listing a home near the canyons, building a personal brand, or refreshing your team photos, I’ll create images that communicate competence and approachability.
Sandy photo locations and when they shine
Sandy and the immediate surrounding area give me a wonderful range of settings:
| Location | Look & Feel | Best Time |
|---|---|---|
| Dimple Dell Regional Park | Wooded ravines, meadow clearings, creek crossings, natural and secluded | Spring through fall, golden hour |
| Little Cottonwood Canyon (mouth area) | Dramatic granite walls, mountain creek, alpine feeling without the hike | Late spring through fall, morning or evening |
| Cornerstone Park | Manicured lawns, ponds, walking paths, polished suburban park | Year-round, late afternoon |
| Historic Sandy / Downtown Sandy | Small-town main street character, brick buildings, local shops | Year-round, overcast or golden hour |
| Bonneville Shoreline Trail (Sandy segment) | Foothills, sagebrush, panoramic valley views, open sky | Spring and fall, sunset |
| Bell Canyon trailhead area | Mountain creek, cottonwood trees, canyon entrance with towering peaks | Summer and early fall, golden hour |
These are my regulars, but Sandy has more to offer than any list can capture. If you have a favorite spot — the park where your kids play, the neighborhood street you love, the trail where he proposed — tell me. Personal locations make personal photographs, and I’m always happy to scout somewhere new.
Planning your Sandy session
- What to wear: Soft, muted tones are your best bet — dusty blue, sage, cream, terra cotta, warm grey. Avoid bright neon, large logos, and busy patterns. Families should coordinate without matching identically. Layers add visual interest and texture.
- Timing and light: Sandy’s proximity to the Wasatch means the mountains cast shadows earlier than flatter parts of the valley. I account for that when scheduling — golden hour timing shifts depending on whether we’re shooting in the foothills or out in Dimple Dell. Trust me on the clock; I know this light.
- Little ones in tow: Snacks, a small comfort item, and low expectations for sitting still. I work with kids constantly, and the best images come when they’re moving, exploring, and being themselves. The candid chaos is where the magic lives.
- Movement is everything: Walk together, twirl your partner, toss a kid in the air. I’ll direct you loosely, but the photographs that resonate are the ones rooted in genuine interaction — not stiff, side-by-side posing.
My style and what to expect
I shoot with a Nikon Z6III and fast prime lenses, working almost exclusively with natural light. My editing is clean, warm, and honest — no heavy filters, no fake orange glow, no oversaturated colors. What you see in your gallery will look like real life, just at its most beautiful. Every gallery includes black and white edits because certain moments hit harder in monochrome. My aim is timeless imagery — photos that look as right on your wall in 2046 as they do today.
Sandy through the seasons
Spring in Sandy means blossoming trees against snow-capped peaks — a contrast that’s uniquely Utah and always stunning. Summer opens up the canyons and extends the light deep into the evening, perfect for sessions that feel relaxed and unhurried. Fall is the crown jewel: the maples in Little Cottonwood Canyon ignite in reds and oranges, and the entire Wasatch backdrop transforms into a painting. Winter brings quiet beauty — fresh snow on Lone Peak, frosted fields in Dimple Dell, and the clean, crisp light of a cold afternoon. Every season here gives me something different to love.
Frequently asked questions
- How far in advance should I book? Two to four weeks for portrait sessions; three to six months for weddings. Fall fills up quickly — September and October are the most requested months.
- What if the weather turns? We reschedule for free. Overcast days, though, are actually wonderful — soft, even light that’s incredibly flattering for portraits.
- How many images do I get? Typically 30 to 80 fully edited images depending on session length, delivered through a private online gallery.
- Do you charge extra to travel from Ogden? No. Sandy is well within my regular coverage area. I drive down I-15 for sessions throughout the Salt Lake Valley with no travel surcharge.
- Do you offer prints? Yes — lab-calibrated prints, canvases, and heirloom albums are available through your gallery. Colors are matched precisely to your edited files.
- Can we bring our pet? Absolutely. Leash, treats, and a sense of humor are all you need. Pets are family and belong in the pictures.
